A stage compressor is a unit that compresses a fluid (like air) through multiple stages, with each stage performing a portion of the total compression to achieve a higher final pressure than a single stage could. A critical component is the intercooler, which cools the fluid between stages to reduce its volume, increase efficiency, and decrease the workload on subsequent stages. This multi-step process allows stage compressors to achieve very high pressures and is more energy-efficient than single-stage units for heavy-duty, high-pressure applications, such as those found in large industrial plants.

How it Works

1. First Stage:

The fluid enters the first compression stage (e.g., a cylinder in a reciprocating compressor or an impeller in a centrifugal type) and is compressed to an intermediate pressure.
2. Intercooling:

The compressed fluid is then passed through an intercooler, which removes heat from the fluid. This cooling reduces the fluid's volume, making it denser and easier to compress further.
3. Subsequent Stages:

The cooled, intermediate-pressure fluid then moves to the next compression stage, where it is compressed again.
4. Final Compression:

This process repeats for each stage, with intercooling between each, until the fluid reaches the desired final high pressure.

Multi-Stage Reciprocating Compressors:

Use multiple cylinders to compress air in steps, with intercooling between stages.
Multi-Stage Centrifugal Compressors:

Consist of multiple centrifugal stages mounted on the same shaft, with each stage comprising an impeller and associated passages.
